Con il supporto di inedite e circostanziate ricerche d’archivio viene presentata la storia conservativa delle tombe dipinte di Tarquinia a partire dalla prima metà dell’Ottocento – epoca a cui risalgono la scoperta di gran parte dei sepolcri a oggi noti e i primi provvedimenti di tutela – fino ai tempi odierni. Sono illustrati sia le avanzate metodologie di conservazione e valorizzazione sia i provvedimenti che hanno consentito alla Soprintendenza di conciliare tutela e fruizione delle tombe dipinte. Vengono descritte le attuali metodologie di restauro che fanno ben sperare circa la definitiva salvaguardia di questo irripetibile patrimonio archeologico. Infine, un nuovo studio dell’Università di Catania approfondisce e arricchisce quello già svolto dal Laboratorio Scientifico dei Musei Vaticani sulla tecnica di esecuzione, sui pigmenti e sugli strati preparatori delle pitture ipogee. Questo libro costituisce un punto fermo per chi dovrà in futuro provvedere al restauro e alla manutenzione delle tombe dipinte e garantire che questo straordinario patrimonio culturale possa essere trasmesso alle generazioni future.
With the support of previously unpublished and circumstantiated archive research, a new edition presents the conservation history of the painted tombs of Tarquinia from the first half of the 19th century – the time of the discovery of most of the tombs known today and the first protective measures – to the present day. The advanced methods of conservation and valorization are illustrated, as well as the measures that have enabled the Soprintendenza to reconcile the protection and enjoyment of the painted tombs. Current restoration methods are described, which bode well for the definitive preservation of this unique archaeological heritage. Finally, a new study by the University of Catania deepens and enriches the one already carried out by the Scientific Laboratory of the Vatican Museums on the execution technique, pigments and preparatory layers of the underground paintings. This book constitutes a milestone for those who will have to restore and maintain the painted tombs in the future and ensure that this extraordinary cultural heritage can be passed on to future generations.
